A History about silence
A short story about silence and the challenges of storytelling.
It’s an incomplete ad uncertain travel.
The complexity of the story catches us unprepared on human feelings, with an impossibility to speak about them without suspending our judgment.
The film starts from an interview done to two last former “IMI - Italian soldier prisoners” of the Germans concentration camps, who still live in Cadore (a region on the Dolomites Mountains in North Italy).
Their story starts at the beginning of the Second World War, when they were enlisted in the Italian Fascist Army and sent to the colonies and to the military front in Europe - Greece and Russia.
But, as Italian soldiers, they were loyal to the king Vittorio Emanuele and not to Mussolini, who was only a minister. After the Armistice with the allies called by General Badoglio and the fall of the fascist regime, Mussolini escaped in the North of Italy and founded the “Italian Social Republic of Salò”. In this moment all the Italian soldiers, who didn’t accept to not swear to Mussolini or the Nazis, were captured and sent to the Lagers: there are more about 650.000 people counted, but numbers are still uncertain.
This film was inspired by the reading of “We, Sons of Eichmann: An Open Letter to Klaus Eichmann” by Gunther Anders, written in 1964
All film’s shootings were made in Pieve di Cadore, at Montericco Fort (BL). Black and White photos are from Guido Coletti’s personal archive.

I explore documentary languages in relation to oral storytelling. I mainly focus on buried and un-given imaginaries developed during crisis and war periods. In relation to narrations and images’ production I try to redefine archiving and research method every time. I work primarily in the field of moving images, with particular attention at the editing as a tool that constantly reshapes the possible meanings.
