Director Biography - Alex Valencia

To the young Alex Valencia, it was always a choice between two options. In one hand, he held a VHS copy of Robocop, and in the other, his beloved copy of Beauty and the Beast. Which one to watch?
Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Alex never really thought about the film industry being in his backyard. His family knew no one in the industry, nor did they see any film shoots taking up blocks in their neighborhood. So why would it mean anything to him? Yet, films took over his life. The monotony of waiting for his parents to come home from work was only quenched by the small VHS collection they had obtained. Eventually, the world of cinema exploded into his life, and he started to dive deep into directors, horror, cult films, and more. From working at a video store to earning two degrees in film, Alex is currently working in the branded content space with companies such as MotorTrend, Land Rover, and Scott Towels.

Director Statement

It is all about the cracks that shine through. Whether through the darkness we experience in our own challenging moments to the everyday sun rays breaking out of its cloudy day. A smile that peaks through the grimace. The child seen inside the monster of its present, and the humanity that tries to express itself through an evil deed. These cracks are what lead me through every stage of this film while trying to keep my eye on my own crack of light as we near completion in order not to go crazy. While A Good Girl begins like a thriller, my hope is that through the cracks of the film, the audience will begin to see something else.
My collaborators and I created this dark little film with enough light and mystery to keep the audience intrigued. Creating a film with very little context and a level of opaqueness (to frustrate a few) is a daunting task that I believe we accomplished with the tremendous help (measured in sweat and tears) of our actresses who injected every ounce of empathy and mystery into their roles.
As the late great Cormac McCarthy wrote, "Scars have a strange power to remind us that our past is real." With A Good Girl, this comes in the shape of not just the physical scars but also the emotional scars that blind us and the scars that teach us a little bit about ourselves.
