"Effects of economic instability as a social determinant of health in the education and future of rural girls"

A story about a rural girl from a single mother-headed household whose future is interfered with due to economic instability, which leads to a loss of focus on her studies. She gets into a relationship with a motorbike rider, unaware that he has a family, and she gets infected with HIV and ends up pregnant. She is, as such, chased away and has to return home to pick up the pieces of her life with her single mother and her sister, who also dropped out of school as a teenage mother.

Director Biography - Alice Charity Awinja

Alice Awinja was born and raised in the rural village of Vihiga county where social amenities are limited, technology infrastructure scarce and economic opportunities are rare for youth and young adults to lead meaningful lives.

Alice has always had a passion to transform the economic resources in her village. She was fortunate enough to be the first to leave the village after secondary school to further her education in Community Development Studies at Makerere University in Kampala Uganda. As a Public Health professional, she is passionate about promoting community health as a result of inadequate platforms to support primary health care for prevention and control of diseases like HIV and AIDS.

In 2016, Alice founded and registered a women-led nonprofit charity called Amazing Grace Center Kenya CBO with a mission to raise healthy, self-motivated, and independent rural young adults to realize their aspirations and lead meaningful and productive lives. Amazing Grace Center Kenya CBO facilitates several education and empowerment programs to support youth and young adults of Western Kenya break the cycle of poverty.
