Jonathan “Yotzu” Orellana, originally from San Salvador, El Salvador, is an independent director and producer passionate about exploring the deepest human emotions. His works are characterized by poignant stories of introspection, where his protagonists are in search of redemption, and in this way, inspire the audience.
With a degree in communications and a self-taught background forged through digital content and his love for film, Jonathan began his creative journey writing, acting and editing a college project called: “Encierro de Insania” (2022).
His directorial debut comes with “En Mi Contra”, a dramatic short film inspired by his personal experience during the lockdown of the 2020 pandemic. In this work, he fuses his passion for contact sports, with a deep exploration of duality and inner conflict. In addition to directing, he assumed the roles of screenwriter, producer and editor.
With a clear vision for the future, Jonathan aspires to professionalize in Mexico and build his career abroad, with the firm conviction of making his debut feature in El Salvador. He is currently developing three new projects: “Lazos” a minute film, the script of his next short film and his first feature film.
“En Mi Contra” was born out of an internal struggle during the pandemic, isolation forced me to live with myself in a way I had never done before. In that process of introspection, uncomfortable questions, internal conflicts and a confrontation with my own duality arose. I wanted to capture that battle on screen through Briana, a street fighter whose confrontation is not only physical, but also an exploration of her fears and insecurities, where ironically, she herself is the one who pushes herself towards self-destruction.
In the end, the message is clear: we cannot eliminate our shadows, but we can learn to live with them.
From my first experiences creating digital content, to this directorial debut, my quest has always been the same: redemption, to inspire others through emotional stories and introspection. This project is just the beginning of a path in which I want to continue exploring the inner complexity of the human being.
