Leda Contopanagos:
Leda Contopanagos graduated with a BFA from the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina, Greece, in 2019, majoring in Painting. Her BFA dissertation included an individual exhibition at the University gallery, consisting of 12 oil paintings under the theme “Day for Night”, a contemporary-minimalist pictorial approach of the subject of light and darkness and its abstract/existential projection on the human condition, nodding to the literary tradition of the French Nouveau Roman and the cinematic style of Film Noir. In 2022, Leda earned an MA in Directing from the MET Film School, London, U.K. Her body of work includes oil paintings, participation in group exhibitions, collaboration at the production level in multiple short films and commercials, and short film directing. Since graduating from Met Film, Leda has worked on short films and music videos, and is currently in the process of submitting her latest project "Asymptote", a surreal short film that delves into the psyche of a couple, to film festivals. Her upcoming short film ‘Undercurrent’, showcased in the 2023 Pitching Lab at the Oscar qualifying Drama Film Festival, is in pre-production and will be filming in Autumn 2024.
Kimie Minobe:
Kimie Minobe, is an Australian and Japanese artist, currently based in London, who specializes in films that explore family relationships and cultural heritage. She graduated with a BFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in 2020, followed by an MA in film directing from the MET Film School London in 2022. She is the recipient of the New Contemporaries Bloomberg Award (2020), and the Henriques Scholarship Prize, awarded for recognition of excellence and achievement in moving image. In 2020, her video piece, “With Love from the USA” was featured on a gigantic screen in Piccadilly Circus by CIRCA (Cultrual Institue of Radical Contemporary Arts), and she collaborated in the same year with artist, Ryan Gander OBE RA for the British Art Talks podcast series at the Paul Mellon Centre. She has had many other collaborations since then, notably, with NC 2019 Award winner, Cyrus Hung and outside the field of visual arts as well, with Grammy Award-winning singer song-writer, Angela Hunte and more. She has exhibited in and worked with institutions such as the South London Gallery, Slash Arts Gallery, and University College London.
We were presented with the opportunity to direct Aricia’s third track, “A Fome E O Canibalismo” during the height of the Covid pandemic, when there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. We were isolating and as the world was noticing the impact that isolation had on mental health, we decided that this would be a very interesting idea to explore within the realm of the dystopian world we wanted to create. Both of us drew inspiration from anime and film within the Sci-Fi genre, most notably “Ghost in the Shell”, “Matrix” and “Black Mirror”. One key focal point that we wanted to showcase was our relationship with technology and how it can be portrayed as a double-edged sword. It connects the world, but also presents an addictive vacuum where we live vicariously. Nowadays because of our increased screen time, our attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter. We interpreted the “hunger” and the “cannibalism” in this song, as our constant need for mental stimulation, and our fear of becoming desensitized to the events happening around the world and the people we love because of it. In many ways, it is a reminder for us to disengage from the virtual and engage in real-life interactions with the people we love. At the same time, it’s an exploration of humanity's tendency to succumb to its baser instincts, in pursuit of power, capitalism, and glory. In this music video, a parasitic “video-game” is used as a metaphor to convey this message. We both realize the essential role that technology, video games and the internet play in our lives, and advances in technology in many ways has helped us live our lives more comfortably and safely. However, considering the current developments in cyberspaces, the metaverse and NFTs, we felt this was a relevant topic of discussion. As with anything in life, we believe that it’s important to find a balance between our hunger and needs, whilst considering our relationship with nature and respecting our planet.
