Director Biography - Martin Lombok

Martin Lombok is an experimental filmmaker born in 1969 in the Czech Republic. He lives and works in both the Czech Republic and Denmark. He uses video art and other technologies to create films that challenge the conventional ways of storytelling and perception. His films are minimalist and realistic, often using static shots and ambient sounds to create a sense of confusion and discomfort in the viewers. He is inspired by the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Popper, Alan Watts, and other existentialist thinkers. He is interested in exploring concepts such as reality, perception, knowledge, violence, and virtuality.

My film A Film is an experiment with form and style, a challenge to the conventional ways of storytelling and perception. I wanted to create a film that would make the viewers feel confused and uncomfortable, as they are confronted with a reality that is both familiar and alien. I wanted to show them something that exists, but that they would never see without me. I used three different shots that alternate in three parts: a foggy apartment, a pre-storm landscape, and an air-conditioning system. I used contact sound and ambient noises to create a contrast between the silence and the noise, the stillness and the movement, the visible and the invisible. I wanted to explore the feeling of trying to remember something, but failing to do so, and the idea that some mysteries have no solution, that not everything can be reduced to small, understandable pieces, that help us explain the whole. I wanted to make a film that is not a message, but a medium, a film that is not a representation, but a presentation of reality.
