I'm Nicholas Harris! I just finished my third and final year at Oberlin College as part of a 3-2 Dual Degree Program, where I will be moving on to Washington University in St. Louis in the fall. By the end of the program, I will have a BA in Studio Art, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I fell in love with stop motion through this project, which was my first foray into the field, and already I have ideas in mind for my next project.
I use my art as a medium for my thoughts and inner questions, to find a way to get these challenges out of my head and down into a physical form. This year, I explored stop motion to detangle my mind. Using polymer clay, I shaped figures to represent different parts of the mind: anxieties, curiosity, logic, truth, and will. Wanting to show the daily struggle against anxiety, I created a narrative, fighting its attempt to shape my identity. Worries about how I appear try to take control of my perception and keep me away from what I know to be true.
