A Day in the Life of a Newark, NJ Dancer | Part 1

A Day In The Life Of A Newark Dancer Part 1 follows the life of professional dancer Elijah J Carr, a Newark, NJ professional dancer who is getting breakfast before his big show in New York City. On his way to the store, he meets fellow Newark dancer Jamar (@unpopularmar) who encourages Skillz to break a quick sweat before the first meal of the day. The film uses Jersey Club music as its narrator, showcasing the deep connection between the city and its club music scene. Through Carr's experiences, viewers get a glimpse into the culture and community that surrounds this music, and the ways in which it shapes the lives of those who embrace it. The short is a celebration of dance, music, and the power of community to bring people together and uplift them.

This piece is an installment from a series of video works called The Theory of Brick City Music, produced by artillery creative cannon in partnership with Brick City Jam and collective of Newark-based visual and performing artists. In addition to producing the series, the group regularly organizes live performance events throughout the city of Newark through Brick City Jam.

Director Biography - Livingston Steele

Livingston Steele is a Newark native, actor, filmmaker, and visionary with deep roots in his hometown and Jamaican heritage. After graduating from the University of New Haven with a degree in Music Business and a minor in TV and Film, Steele's career journey spans the vibrant landscapes of both music and media.

Steele's passion for storytelling and community engagement shines through from his early days at BET Music Matters to his roles in off-Broadway theater productions. His foray into filmmaking saw him co-create "The Theory of Brick City Music," a groundbreaking digital series exploring Newark's rich musical tapestry, which garnered acclaim at festivals like the Newark International Film Festival.

As a proud Organization of Black Screenwriters (OBS) member, Steele is committed to elevating diverse voices in the industry while nurturing emerging talent. Alongside his production company, Artillery Creative Cannon, and the Rorshach mural collective, he co-founded the Brick City Jam festival, a celebration of Newark's artistic heritage.

Through initiatives like Brick City Jam Graffiti & Music Festival, Steele fosters intimate connections between artists and audiences, amplifying Newark's cultural narrative on a global stage. His vision is clear: to authentically showcase the city's history and culture, forging meaningful partnerships with local artists and businesses to instill pride in Newark's vibrant community.
