A Day Off
The inspiration of this story is human relationships in
different strata of society. As a human being, we are always
curious about the social relations we all carry in day-to-day
circumstances, and an irony attached to it. We all possess
love, hate, empathy, sympathy, affection and agony within
the social instances, and so we understand that human
instincts are inborn complex patterns of behavior that exist in
most of us.
This story is an impression of our own experiences and
interpretations. The screenplay is designed to imitate the
everyday story for viewers. Chutti means “A day-off” or “A
leave”. This is a generic scenario in professional world. That
is why, this film is always special to us, as it is so relatable in
its own content to audiences throughout the world. Although
it revolves around an Indian cultural context, but the core is
generic.

Vikrant Mahalle is associated with theater and film making for 10 years. He is contributing to theater and film community by exploring various art forms within Pune (Maharashtra, India) region. Tea 4 Theatre is the community founded by him to cater information and documentation in art space for viewers. He is associated directly and indirectly to many production houses in this region. He worked with BHADIPA, a OTT platform in Marathi language as an actor as well.
He is awarded as Best Director for a solo direction in the year 2018-19 through “Expression Lab Solo Festival”. A passionate artist and budding filmmaker interested in experimenting and pushing boundaries of film making in current socio-political context.
I chose to direct this film because the story revolves around
the protagonists, who relate to each other through a bond of
human behaviors. What attracts me is a more fundamental
question about the social relationships between the
protagonists. They both are driven by love, hate and agony at
the same time. What compelled me in this story is an Indian
culture and an unsaid class structuring within the societies.
How this class structure is evolving generation by generations,
and making sure that, they live together as a part of this ONE
society. The thin line between the truth and a lie is a catchy
factor in this story. The perception of truth and lie is an
individualistic approach for viewers. It is very likely that, a
viewer can relate this story to his own experiences or stories
around him/her. Through direction I always wanted to
delegate this factual art experience to viewers.
