ADHYATM

This documentary explores the mystical lives of sadhus, Hindu ascetics who renounce worldly pleasures to pursue spiritual enlightenment. Rooted in the spiritual traditions of India, sadhus devote themselves to a life of austerity, meditation, and union with the divine. The film provides an intimate portrayal of different sadhus, from those residing in the spiritual city of Nashik.

Through personal stories and interviews, the documentary examines their motivations for embracing a life detached from material existence, offering insights into their beliefs, rituals, and unique worldview. It sheds light on the wisdom these spiritual seekers impart, the challenges they face in balancing ancient traditions with modern influences, and the impact they have as guides for many on the path of self-discovery.

By providing an exclusive look into the sadhus’ daily lives and practices, the documentary invites viewers to witness a living legacy of spiritualism.

Director Statement

In this documentary, my goal was to give viewers a glimpse into a fascinating world—one filled with deep spirituality and a commitment to a life beyond material things. I wanted to explore the lives of sadhus, not just as spiritual figures, but as individuals with rich stories of struggle, devotion, and enlightenment.
During production, we travelled to ancient holy sites, quiet ashrams, and vibrant gatherings to capture the unique essence of sadhus. Each place offered a different view of their lives, from the solitude found in Nashik to the connections made in community. I aimed to show how they interact with the modern world and how they balance their ancient practices with today’s fast pace.
Talking with sadhus revealed many layers to their personalities. Each person we filmed had a unique story and a different journey of self-discovery, yet they all shared a common goal of seeking a higher truth. Our conversations showed the peace and wisdom they have gained through years of meditation, along with the challenges they face—physically, emotionally, and socially.
This documentary doesn’t try to explain everything about what it means to be a sadhu, as that would be impossible. Instead, it invites viewers to think about the questions that sadhus represent: What does it mean to live with intention and purpose? What sacrifices would we make for inner peace? And ultimately, what do we truly seek in life?
