A Chip Off the Old Rock
On most fall days, Clemson, South Carolina is a postcard of Southern charm. Yet, on seven Saturdays each year, this tiny, tranquil town morphs into a college football metropolis. The population swells seven times. Hundreds of cars clog the streets. A river of orange pours into Clemson Memorial Stadium.
“Death Valley” comes to life.
Its heart is Howard’s Rock. Perched atop the stadium, players rub it for luck. They run down the hill in an eruption of emotion. It is called “The Most Exciting 25 Seconds in College Football.” Yet, in less than five minutes, the tradition is nearly destroyed. A rogue fan chips a chunk off the sacred stone. One devotee calls it a felony against the family. Another calls it an act of terror.
“A Chip Off the Old Rock” traces the fine line between fervor and fanaticism. It examines how passion and pageantry can bind a community, but also how the love of a rock can turn a college town into a hard place.
