Colors of the Sun
In her short film Sarra Idris draws an abstract portrait anchored in her migration story of the diversity in the Sudanese, people, landscape and beliefs.
She weaves her idealized notions of her motherland with her own internal dialogue and interviews of two other women with similar journeys.

Sarra Idris is a Sudanese director, editor and visual artist based in New York. She is partner and co-founder of Golden Tusk Labs, a creative development company devoted to telling great stories from unexplored perspectives.
As a director, Sarra's short films have been screened at the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase, New York African Film Festival, Cinetopia Film Festival at the Smithsonian Arab American National Museum (AANM) and The ICA London.
Outside of her professional ventures, Sarra is committed to promoting cross cultural understanding for underrepresented voices. She worked and taught in Sudan (in both Kosti and Khartoum) as part of The Cultural Healing Program and as an Artist in Residence at the Rashid Diab Arts Centre in Khartoum.
I would like to represent the diverse Sudanese community living in America. I was born in Khartoum, Sudan and migrated here with my parents in the 80's. Over the years I have maintained a strong connection with Sudan. It has been my muse for my artwork as well as a way to reconnect and give back. I taught filmmaking and photography classes in the capital Khartoum and surrounding areas. Like others I have also carved out a niche for myself here in America, have learned to balance the parts of my identity that are necessary to hone for survival in places like New York while trying to preserve the beauty inherent in my Sudanese cultural norms.
For years my personal artwork has focused on notions of home and identity. I am fascinated with the construct of identity, this malleable reflection, sometimes rejection and even embrace of our surroundings that help shape who we are.
This film was funded by a grant from the Arab American National Museum.
Given the recent war in Sudan and the refugee crisis that is happening, I am hoping to continue this project and expand it beyond this short film. Hopefully exposure though this festival can help me with funding the larger project.
