A.R. Madlanga is an independent filmmaker born in Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape. In 2019 he was awarded a scholarship to study Cinematography for content creation at ORMS Cape Town School of Photography, since completing his studies he has made various independent experimental short films that have garnered acclaim at various local and international film festivals such as the OBS-cene film festival in Cape Town, Athens International Monthly Art Awards Film Festival, Lift Off Global Network, Cooper awards and V.I.Z film fest in the Ukraine . His unique approach to developing his film ideas through photography and painting has also seen him exhibit his proof of concepts at the 2022 Latent group exhibition at ORMS CTSP, Radical Hospitality at the Bertha House in 2023 and most recently at the RMB Talent unlocked program. Heavily influenced by the late 1960s-70s Hollywood New Hollywood movement and the works of Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky, he is continuously pushing to see how far he can take experimental cinema, while making it more accessible.
