Meagan Belflower has worked on projects for both film and TV including projects distributed by NBC (America's Got Talent), Lionsgate (Multiple), Sony (Multiple), National Geographic (Doomsday Preppers), and Animal Planet. In 2019 she had major neurosurgery due to a rare condition and has since focused on her own creative projects and lives a quieter life. "The Perfect Woman" is her directorial, writing, cinematography and editing debut and first passion project with a budget of $800 that mainly went towards paying the employees on their days off to be at the shop.
This is Co-Director Noah Beckham's first film project. He has an incredible eye for detail, assisted in the writing process, and helped plan many of the beautiful shots you see in the film. He knows good footage when he sees it. Where he works well with the larger contexts, Meagan works on the scene to scene moments. This is what created an incredible partnership between the pair. He is currently working on his first fantasy-inspired novel, and hopes to work on more film projects in the future. He has a Bachelor's of History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The Perfect Woman needs two views because you will see and hear what you didn't see/hear the first time. Astute viewers may even pick out one small detail strategically placed.
This film was shot entirely on a Canon G7X II proving that low budget filmmakers don't need access to a RED camera (or even a budget over $800) in order to be accepted into film festivals. This film has competed against films shot on RED. The camera has a built-in lens. A smaller camera like this also allows for more movement so it isn't confined to a tripod, it is less cumbersome, can fit into all the nooks, and is therefore more expressive. I was the cinematographer, and did not need expensive rigs, jibs, or Steadicams to hold it or get the movement I wanted from it. I have a rare disorder that led to major neurosurgery and so I now I use light equipment. Movement, even subtle movement, is important to me as I rarely shoot on a tripod.
This film was also created by a team consisting mostly of people who had never shot a film before. My dearest friends quickly adapted to their roles on set and worked very hard to bring me and Noah’s vision to life. I am thankful for them, and could not have created this movie without them. They worked long hours with me, gave incredible input, and made the experience special.
I am very much influenced by film noir and grew up watching classic shows and movies. The time period of the 40's-60's has incredible visual flavor, and adds interest to a scene. This film does not take place in the 50s, but is about a guy who fanaticizes and romanticizes the era. This allowed me to take advantage of all the classic wardrobe, scenery, and cinematography of that time. However, this has a true indie spin with the music choices and its quirky nature. In post, my desire was to make the footage have the feel of 16mm film, but with a stronger technicolor-like color profile.
Also, Zoe's located in Forrest Park in Birmingham, AL had to close it's doors after the COVID-19 pandemic. This film is a time capsule that honors the beautiful and quirky little shop that it was.
The film was recut and audio was changed with a new completion date of August 7th 2023.
