Out of Bounds

Crystal Thorn, a bi-racial African American Literature Professor, and her husband, Donald Thorn, Sr., a retired NBA star guard, who is now the NBA’s Conflict Resolution Director, constantly face professional, moral, and lifestyle dilemmas, while grooming sons for the NCAA and the NBA during socially turbulent times. Out of Bounds (OOB) is a cross between This Is Us (diverse, quirky characters), Empire (sons are being groomed for a business.) and Blackish (characters constantly examining gender and race issues to find their place in life).

The Out of Bounds TV pilot script that inspired the short film was written in my last quarter of the MFA (Playwriting) program at The University of California. The script was selected as a top 10 finalists out of 175 scripts in UCLA Film School’s Samuel Goldwyn contest. Writing it provided a space for me to seek closure to my life’s chapter of raising three sons, to vent about the social turbulence in the US, and to celebrate love.
