Ennui and The Canola Sea
Four characters from four different periods of history are spat from a cloud, The Ennui, into a neutral space and defend their newfound freedom of mind. The work experiments with the resilience and elasticity of narrative, linked consciousness and the elegance of grand concepts made on meager means.

Joshua Beahan and Jenna Dawkins are award-winning filmmakers and multi-disciplinary artists working in the mediums of film and video, sculpture, VR, illustration and electronic music. Raised in the tropical backwaters of 1990's Queensland, Australia, their practice is influenced by melting pots of culture, climate and time. Their films often involve the revival of obsolete or unpopular formats via modern technologies and their loose stylistic approach explores utopian illusions, primal impulse and the human action swept up in nature's stampede. Joshua and Jenna's films have been featured at Rotterdam, Slamdance, Brooklyn, Stuttgart and UK (Northern Lights) film festivals where they have won awards for their experimental works, including the IF (Inside Film) Award for Best Short Film. They are currently advancing into interactive media and long form filmmaking.
We pursue a physical and whole approach to our film and video work, wherein process and technologies are directly integrated with the themes and philosophies traveled in our work. Ennui and The Canola Sea is the film act of a three act narrative told across different mediums, in which four characters from four different periods of history are spat from a cloud, The Ennui, into a neutral space and defend their newfound freedom of mind. The work experiments with the resilience and elasticity of narrative, linked consciousness and the elegance of grand concepts made on meager means.
