The Last Dwellers of the Vele

The Vele in Scampia, Naples, represent a clear example of how a social and housing experiment can fail if not supported by the institutions. The evocative and futuristic constructions by architect Franz Di Salvo have been cannibalized since the beginning by thousands of needy people who occupied them before they could be assigned to legitimate tenants. Over the years crime and decay lead to the demolition of 3 of the original 7 structures, and to the recent regulation which ratifies the upcoming destruction of the remaining. Some tenants have already been moved to new houses.
