James is an internationally recognized filmmaker, and award-winning graduate of Melbourne University. Having fallen in love with filmmaking at the age of seven, he suspects the power of cinema lies in its ability to speak to everyone, and to make the world a less lonely place. He finds this comforting.
James’ first short film, Sock Doc (2010), was selected for the VCAA Season of Excellence at Top Screens, and competed as a finalist in the Under the Radar Best Youth Short Film at St Kilda Film Festival. Since then James has written and directed a number of films screening all over the world, including the Cannes Short Film Corner, the Toronto International Film and Video Awards, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
As a storyteller, James aspires to encourage strange and playful perspectives upon familiar situations, and to create heartfelt character studies that evoke a sense of wonder. In between writing and directing his own work, James also illustrates storyboards for various commercial clients. Looking to the future, he aspires to study a Master’s in filmmaking abroad.
One of the most important relationships is the one we have
with ourselves. This was the starting point of Passage of Flick:
a message for the heart, by the heart.
Many of us will remember experiencing pangs of self-doubt
as we floundered our way through adolescence. In such times
of uncertainty and deflated confidence, I believe there is
tremendous power in reconnecting with your inner child, and
seeing the world through their eyes.
This sentiment drove us to make this film. It’s playful, whimsical,
and celebrates the child in all of us, especially when faced with
the ordeal of growing older. This story is very personal to me,
and I hope it similarly strikes a chord with you!
