Bee Orchids (Arı Orkideleri)

Documentary starts with the fauna of Aegean Sea. The parade of spring shows up with bulbous plants. Snowdrops, crocuses and daffodil (narcissus) with its legend. Each flower in this visual feast is beautiful but there is a very special one among them.
The orchid…
The orchid family has 25 thousand natural species. Turkey is one of the richest countries in terms of diversity by hosting about 200 species and subspecies. Orchids came across dangers they cannot overcome when humans came into the picture. Certain species of orchids are facing extinction all over the world. There are endemic species in Turkey that share the same fate.
The genius of orchid is their pollination strategy. For pollination orchids can’t rely on wind. They have to entice insects. Either gently or by trickery…
The conventional way is to use splendid form, dazzling colors, and the promise of nectar. But what makes orchids so brilliant is their unconventional ways. Bee orchids do not produce nectar. But “Why would a bee visit a flower that doesn’t promise nectar?”
Amazingly, bee orchid mimics a female bee. This is the impossible love between orchids and bees. Beauty, intrigue and betrayal… The romantic journey of pollens and a struggle for survival…
