A shell-shocked soldier, George Ganakis, looks to reunite with his family as he returns from the strife of the Korean War. Though, civilian life isn't as easy as he thought as he struggles to adjust to civilian life, experiencing wartime flashbacks. While attempting to find a job, he slowly learns that his service meant nothing to the nation. George even has to ask his brother, Andrew, for his help for a job.

George's inability to reintegrate into American society even causes him to go to the Naval Base looking for a job, but to no avail. While looking for a job, he believes that his wife, Katarina, is having an affair. Though, his African-American neighbors tell him that Katarina is not cheating, she is actually ill in the hospital.

George rushes to the hospital and demands to know what happened to his wife. Unfortunately, there is no way for doctors to save Katarina. George feels like he failed his wife and knows he must not do the same for his two boys, Demetri and Kosta.

Katarina is resilient and fights her illness, but sorrowfully dies. With this loss, George gains the support of members of both sides of the family. Though, with this support comes opposition to him being a single father in 1950s society.
