Syria on the Run

Throughout almost six years of war, one third of the Syrian population have abandoned their homes fleeing from the violence that has caused around 470 thousand deaths. More than 6.5 million people have been internally displaced or have fled to other countries. Many of those who stayed back armed themselves. "Syria on the run" sheds light on the lives of victims and witnesses of this tragedy. Gabriel Chaim went to Kobani and spoke with the father of Alan Kurdi, the young boy washed up on a Turkish beach who became a symbol of the refugee crisis. He also documented the destruction in Aleppo, Syria's second most important city. Chaim shows the historic center turned into a battlefront and chases after stories of rebels who fight against Assad's regime and ISIL. He also speaks to heroes such as Dr. Mustafa Buchnaq, who tends to wounded soldiers. He was a victim of shelling by the regime while the documentary was being edited and passed away on November 14, 2015. Lastly, Chaim registers the suffering of children during the war. In a school that holds classes underground to protect students from air raids, a little boy says: "war is bombing young children."
"Syria on the run" was a World Gold Medal winner in the New York Festivals for Best Documentary and was nominated for the 2016 International Emmy Awards in the Current Affairs category.
