AJ Sykes is a filmmaker with an extensive background in theatre. Originally training at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Stage Management and Television Production, she went on to work as an award winning actor, writer, director before retraining as a filmmaker. AJ graduating in 2017 with an MFA in Advanced Film Practice and an MA in Film Directing from Screen Academy Scotland. Her graduation film, the 35 minute science fiction short Perfect Worlds staring Mori Christian (Outlander, Taggart) Seylan Baxter (Macbeth, Outlander, Tommy's Honour) Daniel Campbell (In Plain Sight, Tommy's Honour), has had 19 nominations so far; including Talented New Filmmaker; Best Director; Best Original Screenplay; Best Science Fiction; Best Short and Best Cinematography among others. Winning Best Supporting Actress for newcomer Molly May Patterson, Best Actress in a short for Mori Christian and Best Design for Fred MacMillian. As a photographer, AJ has run her own dark room, had numerous exhibitions and did the album cover for A Band Name Quinn's Album Red Light Means Go. She has a natural eye for the visual side of filmmaking. She shot her MA graduation film, Date Night, on 16mm and used digital, film, and still images in her short, The Book Keepers. After the success of Perfect Worlds, AJ is working on her first feature from her award-winning script 'A Perfect Worlds', which follows on from where the short leaves off. She is currently in post production on Regrets: a short, emotional drama for Asib Films, centering round abuse starring Kate Donnelly (Still Game, Outlander, Shetland), Lenny Mullen (Orphans, A Fire Within) and Sarah MacCardie ( The Legend of Barney Thomas, Rivercity).
In the science fiction film Perfect Worlds auteur AJ Sykes looks at forgiveness. At forgiving our parents but most importantly forgiving ourselves. ‘Perfect Worlds’ continues on with the themes that I am looking at in the feature ‘A Perfect World’. When writing ‘Perfect Worlds’ I looked at forgiveness. At the effect one event has on as a child and wondered, if as an adult you could say the words that you needed to hear then, what effect that would have on that future now.
By using a story of parallel worlds and different time zones I’ve explored the ideas of guilt and blame. Everything is done in camera using different techniques to look at how to capture the different elements of that story. With the cinematography, production design, music score and colour grade I’ve experimented with how to bring the past into the present and the present into the past and bring those parallel worlds together. By working with the actors in rehearsals and through the psychology of the cinematography I looked at how to build tension in the film and how they would effect the emotional story telling. By using these techniques I hope I’ve allowed the film to breath its own life and I hope you enjoy it.
