Director Statement

In the science fiction film Perfect Worlds auteur AJ Sykes looks at forgiveness. At forgiving our parents but most importantly forgiving ourselves. ‘Perfect Worlds’ continues on with the themes that I am looking at in the feature ‘A Perfect World’. When writing ‘Perfect Worlds’ I looked at forgiveness. At the effect one event has on as a child and wondered, if as an adult you could say the words that you needed to hear then, what effect that would have on that future now.
By using a story of parallel worlds and different time zones I’ve explored the ideas of guilt and blame. Everything is done in camera using different techniques to look at how to capture the different elements of that story. With the cinematography, production design, music score and colour grade I’ve experimented with how to bring the past into the present and the present into the past and bring those parallel worlds together. By working with the actors in rehearsals and through the psychology of the cinematography I looked at how to build tension in the film and how they would effect the emotional story telling. By using these techniques I hope I’ve allowed the film to breath its own life and I hope you enjoy it.
