Stephen Purvis is a native Texan, and an accomplished filmmaker. His greatest asset is the absolute preparation that he brings to each picture. He enjoys the collaborative process, and his great respect for actors allows them to do their best work.
He began his filmmaking career in the editing room. For over ten years Stephen worked as an editor with a variety of talented filmmakers including Joe Dante, Brian De Palma, William Friedkin, Kevin Kline, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, and Meryl Streep. His producing and directing career started with two award-winning documentary series for cable, Combat At Sea (A&E) and Adventures Of The Old West (Disney). This prepared him to produce and direct his first feature film, Deep In The Heart (Of Texas) (3DD Releasing).
Deep In The Heart (Of Texas) was adapted from the acclaimed monologues, In The West. The picture’s ensemble cast featured the distinguished British actors Kenneth Cranham (Maleficent, Layer Cake) and Amanda Root (The Iron Lady, Persuasion). Deep In The Heart (Of Texas) premiered at the opening night of the Austin Film Festival, and also screened in the SXSW Film Festival and the USA Film Festival. It was released theatrically in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. The Los Angeles Times found Deep In The Heart (Of Texas) to be “a charming romantic comedy with a distinctly European tone.” The Hollywood Reporter called it “a cinematic valentine, …full of finely wrought performances.”
Stephen also produced and directed the film noir feature, El Cortez, from an original screenplay by multi-Gemini award winning Canadian writer, Chris Haddock (Boardwalk Empire). Ronnie Sheib of Variety wrote that the film was “...an update of classical noir style.” Time Out New York’s Hank Shteamer said the “Lou Diamond Phillips performance flirts with brilliance.” El Cortez premiered at the opening night of the Harlem International Film Festival, the Reno International Film Festival, and the AFI Dallas International Film Festival. It screened theatrically in Los Angeles, New York and Paris. It has been sold to distributors in over thirty countries around the world.
Recently Stephen produced the short films Séance, The Sprit of 76, and Unkempt. Additionally he is executive producer on the feature films Fugitive Hunter, Alina, and The Black String. Stephen has two feature film projects in development: Reality Hacks The Russians, and Gringos based on the novel by Charles Portis (True Grit). Growing up in Texas is a unique experience that shaped my identity. I have an appreciation and understanding of the Americans who reside outside the coastal bubbles. Since I lived on a ranch and was educated in a rural school system I am very concerned about social justice, the environment, and global warming. Those issues inform my film work.
