Poonam and Ranjana live in Varanasi, a city in North India infamous for its patriarchal culture. Varanasi is a city on the banks of the river Ganges in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). With a population of more than 200 million, UP is India's most populous state and also one of its poorest. Within this complex environment, many women battle these challenges daily and live life on their own terms. This is one such story of Poonam and Ranjana, who pursue their love for kabaddi – a sport played mostly by men in India. The game empowers them to overcome societal and family pressures and to push the boundaries of what is permitted for a woman in rural India.
