Director Statement

Iʼve had the idea for this film ever since I started a casual job at a cafe four years ago. Iʼm baffled by how much consumers feed into the superfood fad and canʼt get enough of the latest, trendy food. Whether it be smashed avocado on toast, almond milk, quinoa or kale, we love to eat what weʼre told is healthy and trendy.

Out of Date is set in a possible and potential future. Shoppers go about their everyday business until their hunger for the latest trend turns them into primitive, aggressive creatures. They dangerously have a complete disregard for each other and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

My vision for the film was to create a bright, sterile and cold store which was achieved with the cameraʼs exposure, costuming and colour grading. As well as an almost apocalyptic atmosphere which was established in the opening shots. The main yodelling music is an original piece created by our sound designer. It creates a slow and steady rhythm to shop to and a feeling of emptiness which comically contrasts the intense moments of the film.

Out of Date is an exaggerated interpretation of what the world may be like if we overuse and overeat our resources.
