Director Statement

2014 Me and my family cleaned my grandparents´ attic. I noticed that there was a bunch of old c-cassettes. Most of them were just old church music or some classical tunes. But one c-cassette was like home recorded and there was somebody´s handwriting. The handwriting said: “To Heikki from memorable interview.” I asked from my family do they know about this cassette. They did not have any idea about it.

I got home and I had the cassette with me. I went to library to listen to it if there is something interested in it. I was surprised when I heard the cassette. It was my grandfather´s voice. Heikki who passed away 1994, when I was ten years old had recorded an interview about himself. I did not have so much memory about him but his voice sound kind a familiar. He told a lot of stories his childhood in Karelia, Finland. He told how he met my grandmother and a lot of the second world war. All the stories opened up a history of my family and all those stories were interesting to hear but this one war story was something special. On the cassette my grandfather told this story how he did this one important decision in the war, which saved his life. I was stunned. From beyond the grave, my grandfather told me why I am alive today. I felt that this is a miracle that I am here, my father is here and my family. I have to make film about this. There was no doubt about it.
