Private Project

TIM

'TIM' is a Freudian short film about an insecure and self-sabotaging codependent who is unable to get over his ex girlfriend. It's a deconstruction of Tim's mind as explored through discussions between Tim and personified versions of his Id, Ego and Superego.

Director and star Alexander Black gained 40 pounds (20 kilos) and then lost them and gained 15 pounds (7 kilos) of muscle in order to play both Tim, who is overweight, and Tim's Ego, who is in great shape (both of whom interact with one another). Due to the physical transformation demands of this project, this film was shot in 2 days, 1 year apart.

Tom Hanks, who encouraged Alexander Black to make this film, noted that this film set a cinematic precedent in terms of it being the first film in history where the same actor interacts with himself as two characters of completely different body types - one in great shape and the other 40 pounds (20 kilos) heavier - without the use of makeup, prosthetics, a body suit or special effects.

Director Biography - Alexander Black

Alexander Black is a versatile American filmmaker/ actor chosen from a world-wide search to play the 2nd lead opposite Tom Hanks in ‘A Hologram for the King’.

Always eager to break cinematic boundaries, Alexander set out to establish a cinematic precedent in his short film 'TIM' in which he transformed his body twice (by gaining 20 kilos and then losing them and gaining 7 kilos of muscle) in order to interact with himself onscreen simultaneously as 2 characters with completely different body types (without the use of make-up, prosthetics, a body suit or special effects.)

Considering the physical transformation demands and technical precision required for 'TIM', Alexander shot it in 2 days, 1 year apart, with the exact same crew, and with the exact same position marks, which were left untouched on the floor of the set location for 1 entire year.
