Blanketed Snows

Through our short and very dynamic documentary we are presenting Armenia’s current water crisis, and the brave and unorthodox idea of two scientists to try to fix it, by “blanketing snow”. If successful, the scientists’ idea promises a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and easily reproducible method of making sure that vulnerable communities get the water they need while mitigating the twin dangers of drought and flooding. The idea is very simple, by covering snow on the mountain with geo-textile materials, they save it from melting and it slowly turns into an artificial glacier. Applied on a large enough scale, this would slow the melting of snow enough to prevent flooding in the spring and would also provide a source of water year round. Our film follows the first year of experiment through its tribulations, difficulties, and eventual success. If the project gets enough funding we are sure it will make a great change locally and have implementations globally in all mountainous regions.
