"Illegitimi non carborundum" which is Latin for "Don't let the bastards get you down." It is something that my theatre professor and mentor, Dr. Sally Porterfield, said to me as I set out into the challenging world of auditioning as an actor after college. An activist and an artist, she was a huge influence on me and encouraged me to make a difference when creating my own art and myself as an artist. She passed away the day of the Women's March, which was also the day before I filmed this short that she would have loved so much.
This short, while humorous and done with a catchy tune, is inspired by exactly that idea of not letting the bastards get us down. We are now faced with stress from the news, from politics, from the world, from being tired from constantly having to stand up for what we know is right and should be our rights. As a comedian and a writer and a woman, I feel it is my duty to use my voice to make a difference and make us smile.
