Private Project

The bone

While making this film, I deemed myself a sculptor. I started with an abundance of images from my animated diary archive. Layer by layer I stripped away, searching for compositions and the essence within the randomness.

The Bone is a hallucinative composition of hand-drawn fragments: an unsettling dream sequence in black and white.

Director Biography - Steffie Van Cauter

Steffie Van Cauter (De Klinge, 1982) graduated from 3D/Multimedia at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in 2005 in Ghent Belgium,
where she is currently based. She develops her work in the border regions shared by animation film, music, drawing and performance.
With her graduation performance/film 'Ich bin Alleine' she received an award at the SKENA UP festival (2005) in Prishtina (Kosovo), as well as winning the Young Theatre Price at the TAZ festival (2006) in Oostende (Belgium).

She is obsessed by the different rhythms in image and sound, the beauty of old industrial districts, harbors, the polder environment where she grew up, the musicality of language, banal conversations, ...
Her work derives from a fascination with the notion of contradiction; the tension between naughty and nice, unexpected structures and simple repetitions, fat and narrow lines, sensible and rough energy.

Steffie Van Cauter creates multidisciplinary productions, balancing on the fine line between fragmentary storytelling and abstraction, whilst maintaining a constant attention to timing.

The films ‘Ich bin Alleine’, ‘Die Fliege fliegt und stürzt verruckt’, '366 (diary movies)’ have been shown on several occasions in several different venues; SMAK in Ghent, Frascati in Amsterdam, Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels, and De Singel in Antwerp.

Since 2010 Steffie is a guest teacher at the Animation Department of The Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), Ghent.

For each day Steffie Van Cauter drew an animation film. ‘366 (diary-films)’ is an wide-ranging archive of 200 minutes of hand-drawn animated image, divided up into ’Cyclus I, II and III’.
It is from this archive that several different projects have been derived:
image-compositions for installations (‘Kijken’), music-videos, and short films (‘Geen hond, wel een hok’, 'Het been').
