Jagannath literally means 'THE LORD OF THE UNIVERSE'.
This film is based on a belief, the people of a great religious country like India believe in rebirth, after death soul again takes a new body and is reborn because it is eternal and never dies. This belief of rebirth is clearly seen in the culture of Lord Jagannath. From time immemorial this universal play of death and rebirth has been performed in the culture of Lord Jagannath at Puri, in the state of Odisha, India.
As the deities are made of Neem wood and a wooden object is likely to decay within a span of time, so idols of the deities need replacement. This process of renewal of the deities is called 'Nabakalebara'. Generally it happens at an interval of 12 to 19 years duration. According to the Indian lunar calendar, when an intercalary month added in the month of Asadha then only Nabakalebara happens. So it's a very rare and auspicious.
As human beings die, here God himself dies and reborn.
This film is all about, the grand celebration of rituals and the deep analysis of the Lord Jagannath consciousness which relates with universal truth.

Director Statement

I believe good cinema relates with actuality and touches the audience imagination. This film is all about the Lord Jagannath’s culture & deeply analyses the physical and spiritual aspects of life. Nothing is created by itself or destroyed completely. Only the physical forms are changing from one form to another. This is the major concept of this film and the phenomenon of the whole universe.
Since the camera is not allowed inside the Jagannath temple, so it was very tough to convey the idea with so many limitations/restrictions. we shot for almost hundred days to make this documentary and it took more than 2 years of time to complete it.
