Swedish writer and director Michael Axelsson, a self-taught filmmaker, began at a very young age with the dream to become an actor. He later attended a theater school in Sweden, and also attended a Swedish - American stunt school, and while pursuing his passion as an actor he realized he had a need of telling his own stories.
He decided to write and direct a short film, and the end result of that convinced him that he wanted to learn more about the filmmaking process and telling stories.
After making a few short films in Sweden he later moved to Bergen, Norway, and that gave him the opportunity to work with his own films professionally. Now he´s commuting back and forth between Sweden and Norway to work on different film projects, and his main focus is now to write feature film screenplays, for himself, and for other film directors.
Each project I make is different, but "injustice" is the recurring theme in all of my films. My hope is to carry inspiration to others through moviemaking, mostly as a wake-up call. I want to provoke, tell the truth about things that people might not think is such a big problem, and tell the other side of a story that you usually don't hear about. I also think humor is a great and important way to reach people, so I try to use that when I can.
I believe that the last film I made, Odd & Maud (Jernbryllup), is the most important story I've done so far. I am very excited to hopefully reach a big audience and share a story that they may or may not have heard about before. I wrote Odd & Maud, because my grandparents were in the situation that, after being married for 63 years, they received the "rejection letter". They were not allowed to live together, not in a couple room, not in the same nursing home, not even in the same town. I started to research and realized that this was more common than I thought. It touched me, made me very upset, and challenged me to write a story about the subject. We shot the whole film in a real nursing home. The manager was very happy that we chose to film Odd & Maud in this particular nursing home. He told me about a call he received from the politicians. He said he was told to rebuild all couple rooms to single rooms. When he questioned it, the politicians threatened to shut down the entire nursing home if he did not do what they said. Is this democracy? I feel a deep passion for film and telling stories, and Odd & Maud is a perfect way for me to show one of many of the injustices that exist in the world.
We're all going to be old one day so we need to fight now, while we are young and strong. The politicians know that most elderly people do not have the strength, time, or money to fight against a rejection. It makes the elderly depressed, and some go even further and commit suicide. All they want is to stay with the one they love "'till death do them part", not "'till government do them part". That's what my film is about.
