Director Biography - Gary M Gowans

I originally attended Edinburgh Art College in 1979 before 'taking French leave' to work in various itinerant jobs in Europe in the early 1980's. On returning to the UK in 1984 I worked in the building trade for some years before returning to study design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee – just as the Apple Mac was introduced to the place. I graduated in Graphic Design with 1st Class Honours having completed elective studies in animation and video. I worked in the design industry in the early days of interaction and touch-screen technology, with clients as varied as AT&T, Ulster Bank, Abbey National, British Airport Authority before becoming a design lecturer at DJCAD, University of Dundee. I am currently Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of Graphic Design. As a researcher I have published internationally and developed software systems to support people living with dementia; I am a designer and exhibiting artist; an educational team member of the International Society of Typographic Designers and a maker of short films and motion design.

Director Statement

I am fortunate to work in a creative environment with enthusiastic and talented students. I'm a Graphic Designer by training and I love the discipline. It is wide ranging subject, which is increasingly involved with the moving image, but if 'push-comes-to-shove' I have to admit that my first love is cinema. From silent Hollywood to German Expressionism; Golden Era to Neo-realism; sci-fi to musicals, Swanson to Schwarzenegger. As a boy I variously fell in love with Judy Garland, Carole Lombard, Rita Hayworth, Olivia de Havilland; and the work of Directors like Powell & Pressburger; Michael Curtiz; Hitchcock; Kubrick et al. Long may the love affair continue.
