OLD FASHIONED
It's just one of those busy days. Full of work, family needs, anxiety of a recent break up, and a secret appointment with the gyno. Fighting to stay fierce and tackle the day, we see that contemporary life can seem overwhelming and noisy on the surface, but some things never change.

Mandi Reno-Matarrese is originally from Los Angeles, and moved to Oakland in 2013 to be involved in the bay area film community.
She has sustained a freelance career in development and production over the last 10 years, and is commonly a consultant for third party production companies. Her experience as a line producer or production manager has ranged from independent film, to corporate commercials and network TV; joining the Director's Guild of America in 2016. Mandi's passion for storytelling lies in creative development of subject matter she finds interesting and risky, that showcase multi-dimensional female leads.
I wrote this during a time of transition in my personal and professional life. At a crossroads, I had dedicated a considerable number of years to working in entertainment as a “crew member” or assistant helping others accomplish their goals and dreams. I couldn’t recall the last time I did anything creative for the sake of artistic expression, although to industry standards and my peers, I was a successful freelancer. It was as if I had an overload of creative build up inside of me, when I got the idea for Old Fashioned. It came to me after a strange appointment with my gynecologist. The product of this idea, ultimately became a glimpse of how I saw the world and my place in it.On the brink of age 30, I felt this pull between my progressive self and a more conservative, traditional identity. Much like my character, “Alicia”, I am the type of person that takes on a ton of pressure to maintain an image of perfection and success to my family and the world around me. Of course most is self-inflicted (white girl problems) but there is great enjoyment in the art of being an over-achiever. Directing for the first time was undoubtedly a liberating experience and was unexpectedly rewarding to flex my creative muscles. Also, I had such a foundation of set experience and a community of people to bring it to fruition, physical production was a dream. I hope to re-create it over and over in future directing opportunities.
