Papa Weifeng
In his debut documentary, Papa Weifeng reveals his true colors as a Chinese rainbow father. Raised in an era when open talks about sex were taboo, Papa Weifeng exposes the sexual cultural wasteland surrounding him, and pokes fun at the distorted mentalities he encounters in Chinese society.
The film shines a bright light on him and other rainbow parents. Together, they form a close-knit group of everyday heroes taking the lead in demanding equal rights for their homosexual children. Resolutely striving for happiness, they break down old concepts and contribute to the creation of a flourishing world embracing diversity.

Papa Weifeng (°1962, Xi’An) has a son who came out as a gay man in March 2014. He accepted his son’s homosexuality and quickly started volunteering at the organization PLFAG China (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays). He joined in several PFLAG China national conferences, traveled across the country as an LGBTI activist, and participated in LGBTI documentaries such as “Papa Rainbow”.
In 2015, he took part in the LGBTI video capacity building training “Queer University”. He was one of 2 participants selected to realize a documentary with full support of the Chinese LGBTI webcast Queer Comrades.
Today Chinese society has changed enormously. People don’t panic anymore when there’s talk of masturbation, hook-ups and homosexuality. People aren’t ashamed anymore of being a sexual minority and speaking their mind. People are not desperately clinging anymore to the yokel of traditional culture hanging around their neck.
The colliding of ideas, the changing of lifestyles and opinions form a tidal wave that cannot be stopped in this society. Only when we let it run its course, can we achieve an all-inclusive universe. Let’s hold hands to smash old and decayed ideas, and create a flourishing world full of diversity.
