Erik, a native to France who spent his childhood in the Middle East, currently resides in China. Early on, a passion for photography and filmmaking became instilled in his framing of the world. The first stories he told were through black and white film portraits he shot while traveling during his mid-teens.
In 2006, Erik moved to Shanghai and then became the director of photography on a documentary called "Shanghai Quest", which received an Audience Choice Award at the Roving Eye Film Festival in 2008. From then on, he continued to work professionally behind the camera for the next ten years shooting commercials, TV shows and more documentaires.
In 2015, Erik turned his focus to writing and directing and went to New York City with one goal - to shoot an American narrative short film. "Time" is that film.
As a self taught writer and director, I wanted to make my first film about a subject I am passionate about, a subject that reached deep into my soul, a subject that is true: just my personal story.
I started writing “Time” because I wanted to make people debate about love, guilt, and compassion. I was truly inspired by “Blue Valentine”, directed and written by Derek Cianfrance, as well as “Take this Waltz” by Sarah Polley, which literally changed my life.
If I, just for a moment, change someone’s vision of relationships like those films did for me, I am a fulfilled man.
Erik Martens.
