Director Statement

WILL DO traces the story of an unforeseen event on the island of Maui that leads us into the mystical journey of a boy named Will Smith and his adventurist mother, whose benevolent spirits have impacted thousands of people in the world.

When I met Will's mom, Susan and heard about all of the people in the world they have touched, I was astonished. She is a mother whose love and courage are palpable. He is a boy far beyond his years in heart and wisdom.

I very quickly knew that learning their story was meant to be and by sharing it, we could inspire others to reflect within themselves the meaning of giving and forgiving as well as ponder their own purpose in life.

Making this documentary has been a fervently personal and creative process. There have been so many inter-connected events and discoveries that have made me question the significance of synchronicity. I also became a mother while in production… so this journey and story have taken on an even more profound meaning for my partner, Cinematographer Darryl Patterson and me. Our hearts have become fuller places.

My hope is that your heart too will expand and you will consider what “will do” means to you in your own life.

With Gratitude--
Kelli K. Barnett
