Different Bayern

Director Statement

DIFFERENT BAYERN is a tale of home and the loss thereof. On first sight, one might look at the film as a comedy about football and hopefully be entertained by it. However, underneath these light layers there are rather uncomfortable topics to be found, that define our present and will continue to shape our collective future.
Austin, a professional football player from Ghana, has to give up his home against his will; Oertel, an old school coach slash football romantic, feels betrayed and uprooted at the other end of the world at the hands of modernization. Both are shaken up in their long-held beliefs and collide with each other until finally creating an empathic dialogue. In short: Our present discourse on the refugee question in Germany is comically distilled into a microcosm in the form of a tiny Bavarian village. An abstract take on current affairs, that we simply felt obliged to as young film makers.
The power of comedy lies in the ability to work with topics such as migration, polarization and social exclusion - all of them tragical elements - in a fleet-footed way without denying their social weight. On that note, one might want to look at DIFFERENT BAYERN as a tale of globalization, the world as it is today - because if all these burning questions have made their way into a no man’s land by the name of Gretzing, they really ought to concern all of us.
