Are You Watching Me?

What happens in the moment before a dancer completes an action?
What happens when a movement fails?
What happens when a dancer does not know what to do?

“Are You Watching Me?” observes the vulnerable dancer; a dancer who has weaknesses and strengths, who is creative, who is unique, who is beautiful with all her perfect imperfections and who is human. Set in an urban environment, the film juxtaposes the lone dancer amidst the architecture of society and the people who inhabit it.

Director Statement

'Are you watching me?' is a response to a film project for my Masters of Dance at The Victorian College of the Arts and is my first attempt at making a film. My intention for the film was to investigates the camera as a catalyst for invoking truthful reactions from a dancer, exploring the sudden hyper awareness that often comes when one is overtly observed (or in this case, filmed). In this project I have endeavoured to capture the humanity of a dancer through the documentation of their uncontrolled and at times undesirable physical manifestations of feelings of self-consciousness. Furthermore, “Are You Watching Me?” attempts to use this technique to discover truthful moments of vulnerability that have the potential to create a personal connection between the audience and the performer.
