Rising

2015 saw change in South Carolina. In June a gunman killed nine black church goers in Charleston and, in less than a month, the Confederate flag, a white supremacist symbol, was removed from the statehouse grounds. Then in October a 1000 year flood inundated much of the state causing untold damage and loss of life. But, during and after these events there has been a change - a change that has been a long time coming. The racial bias and ugliness of the past seem to be ebbing away as communities come together to heal. Through the vehicle of dance, we give you our little film as we strive to move forward and repair our damaged lives and checkered past.

Director Statement

Working with Terrance Henderson and his dance troupe has been rewarding and mirrors the themes we are working with as diverse Carolinians working side-by-side to do important work and move progressively into the future.
We feel our work reflects not only our diversity but also our heritage as Southerners through our use of historic regional music linking our common past and celebrating our goal to join together in renewed human creative strength.
In this film we bring together our unique cultural backgrounds and also our joint appreciation of many who have creatively used dance for camera in the past. Some will no doubt note our nods to Martha Graham and Busby Berkeley.
