La marche de l'empéreur

The title 'La marche de l'empéreur' is taken from a documentary (2005) about emperor penguins journey to their breeding ground in the Antarctic. This film from the beach can also be seen as a nature documentary, but on the human being.

Two men are walking on a pebble beach. One is following the other. They come across as inept, as their troubled walk on the pebbles appear meaningless. One of them, the pale one, is wearing a cap he has acquired, to not get sunburnt in his face. He is tall, but has developed a curved spine in order to communicate with the others more easily. The other, tanned and heavy at front, is keeping his balance on par by gallantly bending backwards.

Meanwhile, a Russian bomber aircraft is moving across the border from Syria and into Turkish airspace. The Russians on the beach are oblivious. It will drastically change the Russians migration to the beach in Mahmutlar for months to come.

The film is paired with a Nils Frahm mix version of J.S. Bach’s ‘Jesus bleibet meine Freude’ ("Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life").

Irina has shown work at various galleries in Oslo, as well as contributed to recent exhibitions in Shanghai (CHN), Kofu (JPN) and at the Digital Art Bienniale.
