David started BCILD in order to assist schools in putting themselves in the center of innovation and creative thinking, adding enrichment to under-resourced communities through effective use of the internet. He believes passionately that enriched and purposeful education with equal access to online resources will substantially narrow gaps in education inequality.
David grew up in the Natal Midlands in South Africa. After graduating from Diocesan College in Cape Town, he attended the University of Cape Town where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. In the 1980s, David moved to New York to further his education where he received a B.B.A. in Management, and an M.B.A. in Marketing. He later earned his Ms. Ed. and Advanced Certificate in Gifted Education while teaching at Hunter College Elementary School in New York. After teaching fifth grade for five years at Allen-Stevenson, an independent school in Manhattan, David went on to receive an Ed. M in Private School Leadership through the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University.
In addition to founding and operating BCILD, David is currently a board member of Artworks for Youth, an organization dedicated to providing art education to under-served children in South Africa. He is a past Vice-Chairman of Young New Yorkers for the Philharmonic, and served on the Junior Committee of the Fresh Air Fund.
I believe passionately that all students should have access to developing ideas on how best we teach and solve complicated problems in society. I designed and implemented this project, with the sixth grade teaching team at Dawson School and Chris Hume of Kodo Kids, to serve as a model for how all students can learn these vitally important design thinking skills.
