Director Biography - Danny Antonelli

I met Bill in Rome in 1972 on my way back to the USA after living in India for 3 years. I sailed for New York in October and Bill and Shelby and the kids sailed in early 1973.

We met up again in Hollywood. I witnessed the early successes and saw the artist finally establish himself as a composer to be respected.

In 1980 I graduated from Cal State University Northridge and left for Europe to start my career as a lyricist, songwriter, librettist and writer of radio plays and stories.

Director Statement

The original idea for the documentary came soon after I visited Bill and Shelby in Pensacola, Florida in 2000. When I got back to Germany I prepared the treatment and proposal and there was some interest, but nothing happened before Bill’s 60th birthday, which was my original goal. So I kept trying and finally, thanks to Eduard Turcanu and investor Thomas Bucheli, from Switzerland, the project took off. I recruited my friend Klaus Weller as cameraman and another friend, Richard Kaplan, took on the task of coordinating interview and filming appointments in Los Angeles. Maria Carpenter, a friend from my school days at Good Shepherd, helped with the technical equipment needed and everything worked. Without friends, things just don’t work as well. Thank you!
