Pearl Marie Azalea is a bookish tom-boy living on a farm in Rural Oregon in the late 1980's.
Raised by an atypical family, she doesn't fit in in school, is bullied mercilessly and acts out. Cast adrift into an overwhelmed foster care system, she spends a few years bouncing from place to place before ending up in Marigold Home for Girls. Aged out of the system, she returns home, faces a great loss, is unable to cope and bails for life on the road.
Inspired by her book selection she sets forth and travels across the US on the back of a motorcycle making questionable choices and living life on her own terms.
Through love, loss, death and violence Pearl finds her own way in the world.
