Director Statement

In 2014, my mum quit her full time job to look after my grandma, and once my grandma became well again, my mum was unable to find a job again, despite being an one of the first women in her previous job, as well as having run her own business for many years. I joked that she could always be a "mum" (not one of my best jokes) but as I was looking for a new film idea, Hire-A-Mum was born.

Hire-A-Mum is a parody of infomercials, examining how much physical and emotional labour mothers do for free, and if we were going to pay for that, how much would it cost? My mum briefly considered acting as a new career path after this movie, but too many retakes on the spinning chair made her decide it wasn't for her. She now works as a manager at an after school care - amusingly, a job very similar to being a mum.
