Born in Hong Kong, Perry Pang was raised in Newport Beach, where he got his start in directing student films while being a district swimming champion and water polo player. He decided to commit to the art of filmmaking, and was accepted into New York University. After graduating with honors from NYU's Tisch Film School, Perry held stints at CAA, Sony Entertainment, and Paradigm to learn the back end of the business.
After an exciting experience in entertainment business, he returned to filmmaking and moved to Los Angeles to study the Meisner Technique. Since his studies, Perry directed and starred in Champion, a short film about a transgender soccer star which screened at the 2017 40th Asian American International Film Festival in NYC.
“Champion” was inspired by newspaper articles. I came across real life stories about children who are gender-fluid, boys who feel like they are girls and vice versa.
The script was written over a couple of years on and off. I set out to tell a story about a young man who comes out as transgender to his best friend and how the outcome can affect a person’s well-being. These kids, teens and adults are courageous people, completely vulnerable and I dedicate this film to them.
