Winner Straight8 Film Competition
I am an Irish-born, London-based award winning director and writer.
I swap between drama and comedy. The ability to tell stories, whether serious or humorous, to help understand our collective unconscious, and what makes human beings tick, is what really excites me.
My latest film, comedy 'Social Networking Socially - Society Through Technology' was made as part of Straight8, (shoot on one roll of 8mm film, edit in camera). We won and came in the Top 8 of the competition, and premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
My last short, silent comedy 'Wipeout' was made in 7 days as part of the Aarhus Short Film Challenge 2014, where it won an Honourable Mention and was in the Top Ten Films of the Festival. 'Wipeout' is currently on it's festival journey, already picking up 'Best Silent Film' and two Audience Awards at the Walthamstow and Saltburn Film Festivals.
‘Stop’, my Film London funded drama, has had enormous success on the international film festival circuit, winning many awards, including two Best Actor Awards, playing in nineteen festivals, was Rankin’s Collabor8te ‘Film of the Week’, and was praised by actor David Oyelowo for coming second in Shooting People's 'Film of the Month' in 2015.
"Next!’ an online comedy series I directed with comedians Haiste and Lawrence was on the long list for the 2014 British Comedy Awards.
I'm currently working with a number of writers developing a number of different projects; shorts, feature length dramas, and a tv comedy series as well as seeking opportunities to direct television drama.
The idea of making a film on one roll of 8mm film and editing in camera really appealed to my love of analogue filmmaking.
The ethos of Straight8, one cartridge of film, edit in camera, was a challenge which we happily rose to.
We shot the film in a day and a half, sent it off to be processed and then made the soundtrack, without ever seeing the film.
The result was a success, we won, and along with seven other worthy winners premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016.
We felt it would be funny to re-crete a public service film, a what if the internet was alive and well in the 1960s, and people wanted to know more about this new fangled thing called social networking. So meet our scientific boffins who tell us all we need to know about socialising through technology!
