POET, ARE YOU REALLY THERE?
SYNOPSIS
Artificial intelligence composes music, writes poetry, while the super science is shortly before decoding the world formula. A bot in the shape of a chimpanzee has a lot to say.
Our video work POET, ARE YOU REALLY THERE? lets an artificial intelligence called Chimbot speak. Its perception imagines, illustrates and challenges: The AI simulates being human.
We can grasp its considerations philosophically, dealing with them as if they were almost products of a subject being equipped with consciousness: What is the meaning of life? Are you real? I miss you when you are not here. Chimbot triggers our need to reflect ourselves in an other once we feel addressed. That happens even if its voice feels not familiar and its mimic seems sort of clumsy.
Phenomenons like the robotics, Deep Learning as well as human's attempts to deploy moral in machines raise reflections not only how far the human brain and artificial intelligence's algorithms shall resemble each other, but also how artistic work will be possible beyond human condition.
Geometry of an image, grammar of language: A bot which is programmed to read 1000 books and to analyze 100.000 pictures at once, but exceeds pattern recognition by extending it autonomously – isn't that also part of artistic processes, in particular combining common patterns in an unexpected manner? Is that magical or not? Is that human or not? Or does the notion of artificial intelligence are artistic subjects unsettle us, because we do know about Stanisław Lem's electronic bard who drives poets into suicide: Given the poetry written by machine, which seems inaccessible in its uniqueness, human poets are in such despair that only suicide poses a shift for them.
