Spectratta

Spectratta
Brief Synopsis
We are all on the spectrum, if only by our tiptoes. The more we recognize this, the more compassion, empathy and indeed celebration we can experience for the whole spectrum of neurodiversity. In “Spectratta," the video companion to Sonatina for Violin and Piano "Parallel Plaid,” time literally stretches and compresses in ways very familiar to those affected by Autism SD and ADHD/ADD as they interact with the outside world. Described by a festival-goer as "Mikrokosmos meets Hanna-Barbera," Spectratta brings hyper-focus to an interlocked time dilation-contraction dance between parent and child.

Director Statement

Part of the "lost generation" of women who grew up with invisible AD(H)D, I aim to help raise awareness and celebration of differing brain functionality. The theme of ADD required a hyper focused approach toward creating this project to the extent that I carried out every aspect on my own. Inward vs Outward focus is continued through the recording of Spectratta. In live performance of the score to silent film I worked with a live pianist. For the soundtrack recording, I performed it "virtually" in the computer, editing it into sounding how I would play it in real space. Meanwhile, the character of the violin performance in Spectratta is purposefully "raw" in that I have approached it with the kind of singular focus and passion that only ADD can bring. This work is currently being expanded into a multidisciplinary dance piece in collaboration with the DAIPANbutoh Collective.
