self portrait in may
Inspired by a quote and the recent visit of her children, the filmmaker ponders over various themes relating to life and what it means to take care of it. Both a self portrait and portrait of a community, ideas of home, upbringing, happiness, and relationship are explored against the backdrop of spring's awakening. Thoughtful and meditative, "self portrait in may" offers the viewer a sense of self through the sharing of the universality of experience.

Catherine Bussiere is a Canadian photographer and filmmaker based in Nova Scotia. Her work, at once candid and thoughtful, explores home in all of its senses. Through her lens we steal a glimpse into the deferential intimacy of the everyday, and the surprise it holds.
This is my first feature film. It was done under the 1KWAVE Atlantic challenge which was to make a film in five months with a budget of $1 000. I decided to make a documentary and stay right home. For a month I filmed my immediate surroundings in rural Nova Scotia. I interviewed family and friends. The result is a poetic meditation on life accompanied by the striking beauty of spring.
